Fan Clutch Removal

This is how I removed the viscous fan clutch assembly from my Land Rover Discovery.  The problem with the removal is that as you try to turn the nut that holds the fan on, the fan shaft turns too.  What to do?  Well, you could by the special tool set from Land Rover, or with a large crescent wrench, a pair of vice grips and a mallet, you can get it loose in no time.

1)  You need either a large crescent wrench, or you can go you your local AutoZone and borrow a Ford Fan Clutch tool.  There are two wrenches in the kit, one for the fan nut, the other is useless.

2)  Remove the fan cowl cover.  Four screws.

3)  Put a vice grip on the fan pulley so that the handle of the vice grip rests on the idler pulley.  That way when you turn the nut on the fan, the pulley (and hence the fan) will be held fast – see pic.

4)  Now put the Ford tool (or big crescent wrench) on the fan nut and turn it COUNTER CLOCKWISE (toward the passenger side of the truck) until the vice grip solidly holds.

5)  Give the wrench a good whack with a hammer (I used a 3lb sledge) to break the nut loose.

Hit the wrench with a hammer or mallet

6)  Once you break it loose, it’s easy to turn until it comes off.

7)  That’s it!
